Privacy

Takes is a free Mac app. Your videos, scripts and chats stay in folders on your Mac. Takes sends none of them. Your agent (Claude Code, Codex or pi) talks only to its own provider, such as Anthropic or OpenAI, the same way it does without Takes. A feature you add a key for (Gemini, Higgsfield, ElevenLabs or Replicate) sends its request to that service.

Takes never sends your chats with its agent. No chat history, no prompts, no replies, no scripts, no video titles, no file names, no post text and no keys. Not in the update check, not in the usage counts, not anywhere.

The update check

At launch and every six hours, Takes asks gettakes.app for the newest release. The request carries the app version, the macOS version and whether an iPhone used Takes on that Mac in the last 7 days. We keep those three values and the country of the request. No ID and no IP address.

Which link you came from (once)

If you came to gettakes.app from a link that names its source, such as ?ref=hn on a post, or from another website, the download links on the page carry that short name: "hn", "linkedin" or a site name such as "github". Your browser keeps it for that tab only, not in a cookie. When you then download Takes, gettakes.app makes a random 10-character code for that download and stores the code, the short name, the time and whether it was the DMG or the install command. The code goes into the name of the DMG file (Takes-<code>.dmg) or into the install command's script.

The first time Takes checks for updates, it sends that code once, with the update check above. Takes finds it in the name of the mounted Takes disk image or in a file the install command left, and sends nothing else with it. gettakes.app then keeps only the short name with that update check and marks the code as used, so one code counts one install. Codes that are never used are deleted after 30 days. The code is not linked to you, your Mac or your IP address. Without a source on the link, nothing of this happens.

Usage counts (off unless you say yes)

Takes asks once. If you say yes, it sends one small report a day: a random ID made only for this, the versions, and counts such as how many takes, edits, storyboards and posts your library has, and which plugins are on. You can see the exact report and turn it off in Takes › Settings › Usage.

This website

gettakes.app counts page visits, runs of the install command and download clicks: the page, the country and the site or ?ref= name that linked here. No cookies, no IP addresses.

The roadmap

On the roadmap, your browser keeps a random ID (in its local storage, not a cookie) so the page knows which rocks you backed and how many hammers you have left. We keep that ID with each rock you back, the country, and a code made from your network address and the day. That code limits votes per network, changes every day and cannot be turned back into an address.

Ideas you send are seen only by Marvin until he puts one on the board. If you leave an email, it is used only for the roadmap mails you asked for: one to confirm it, one when your idea goes on the board, and one when a rock ships. Every mail has a link that deletes your address.
