App by app
Takes is a free, open-source Mac app for talking-head videos. The teleprompter sits next to the camera preview and records the take: camera, or camera and screen as two synced files. The text follows your voice in the script's language, or scrolls at a speed you set with ↑ and ↓. It can also hang from the notch, right under the camera, and start a take from there, or open in a window of its own, mirrored for a glass rig. With Claude Code on a Pro or Max plan, Takes also writes the script, cuts the edit and drafts the posts.
Where it falls short: it needs macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon. The notch panel stays out of Takes' own recordings; we have not tested it against Zoom or Meet screen sharing. The iPhone app is not in the App Store yet. The Takes teleprompter.
A Mac-only notch teleprompter with a one-time price ($29.99, also in Setapp). The text sits under the camera and follows your voice, and it stays hidden when you share your screen. It has no account. It does not record video.
A notch teleprompter for macOS 14.7 and later, $39 once, with no subscription. You set the pace with keyboard shortcuts; it does not follow your voice. It hides from screen sharing.
A free, open-source notch teleprompter for the Mac that follows your voice and hides from screen sharing. It calls itself an AI teleprompter; its pages don't say much more about the AI part.
A Mac app (macOS 12+) with a free plan that adds a watermark and a Pro plan by subscription. It records with the camera, follows your voice (VoiceGlide), mirrors text on the Pro plan and has an AI script writer. It needs an account.
An iPhone and iPad app that also runs on Macs with Apple silicon. $29.99 plus in-app purchases. It follows your voice (VoiceTrack, English only), mirrors text, records with the camera and can write scripts with AI.
Free with in-app purchases, for macOS 12 and later. It mirrors text and shows a see-through window you can put over another recorder. It doesn't record on its own. An account is used to sync scripts between devices.
Descript is a full video editor with a teleprompter built in. It records the camera and the screen, scrolls at a set speed, can flip the text for a rig and keeps its window out of the recording. It needs a Descript account.
We read each app's own website or App Store page on 7 October 2026 and wrote down only what they say. Where a page says nothing, the table says "Not stated". We did not test every app. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us in Discussions and we will fix it.
